How is the new GI bill different?

The new, post 9/11 GI Bill was signed into law in July of 2008 as a way to further enable service members to enjoy military education benefits. The new GI Bill becomes effective in August of 2009.

The New/Post 9-11 GI Bill provides:

  • Up to 100% Tuition and Fee Coverage
  • A Monthly Living (Housing) Stipend
  • Up to $1000 a year for Books and Supplies
  • One Time Relocation Allowance
  • The Option to Transfer Benefits to Family Members
  • And more!

Under the new, post 9/11 GI Bill, reservists with combat and/or active duty beyond 30 days of service time will become automatically eligible for some or all portions of GI bill benefits. Whereas previously there was a "buy-in" fee for some service members for the GI bill, there will no longer be such a fee. Spouses and children will also be eligible for GI bill benefits in many cases. Additionally, benefits will increase monetarily for many service members. Service members who currently receive previous MGIB benefits or REAP benefits should visit Military.com to learn more about the new GI bill and how it will effect your educational benefits. Your university's VA advisor will be your best resource in deciding which VA benefits best suit your educational plan. You can also call the VA directly at 1-888-GIBILL-1.
